About us
MAVEG – the Hungarian Vegan Association was established in March of 2018. Our goal is to change the general overview of people who joined the animal rights movement or who are going plant-based. We aim to embrace every vegan initiative or group and also work on popularizing the idea of the cruelty-free lifestyle in Hungary.
We work together with lawyers, legal practitioners and health professionals (GPs, dieticians, different specialists), who are qualified to provide professional support when it is needed. For example we support Hungarian families with legal advice in case they have difficulties receiving vegan lunch for their children at school.
We also work on outreach programs; organizing internationally known professionals workshops/talks to Hungary. Just before COVID-19 hit our country, we invited Melanie Joy and Tobias Leenaert to hold a 2-day long CEVA workshop here in Budapest (see photo).
We organize workshops and presentations for vegans or non-vegans as well about the plant-based diet, animal rights, vegan fashion and lifestyle (etc.). These workshops usually take place in schools, on different events (Vegan Sunday Market Budapest ; Vegan Food Fest) or online, via zoom.
During the summer we organized a Vegan Holiday (in 2022 the fourth Holiday will take place) where we had the opportunity to get away from the city together, relax and connect with each other and cook amazing dishes. It was an amazing time to further strengthen our relationship and get to know our new members and allies.
We have translated a book in 2019 (Peter Singer- Animal Liberation) as well as many vegan documentaries (e.g. What the health). We created subtitles for recorded talks and we even contributed to the dubbing of the movie Dominion.
Currently there is no paid employee at MAVEG which means we are working with volunteers only. We are a small association at the moment, however we are working on high-volume projects and plans to get more members on board.
